Source trail / Evidence in context
Follow the claim, then the source
A source can help with a decision when it answers the question you actually have. Begin with the claim, then read what the record can support.
Ask for a source that answers your question
“What supports that?” is a useful question about an offer. Ask for the medicine name, the exact claim, and the source meant to support it.
- Is this about the same medicine and form?
- Does the source discuss the same use?
- What does it leave unanswered?
- What date belongs to the claim?
Ask the person treating you to walk through the part that relates to your situation. If the source leaves something unclear, keep that uncertainty in the conversation.
Different records answer different questions
A licence record
The state group that licenses doctors is called a medical board. Its records can show whether a doctor has a licence and what discipline the board has made public.
Use it to check the doctor’s licence. Bring questions about treatment back to the person giving you care.
An approval record
The number beside a medicine in the government’s drug list is called a National Drug Code.
The US medicine regulator’s full name is Food and Drug Administration; this chapter uses FDA.
The FDA explains that an entry in this list is no proof of approval for that medicine (as of September 26, 2026).
Request the approval record itself when that is the claim being made.
A report about a problem
The FDA cautions that a report alone neither proves a drug caused a problem nor shows how often that problem happens.
Ask what the report does establish. Keep a reported concern and a proven cause distinct.
Keep the date with the answer
A useful reading note includes the claim, its date and the source link. Bring that note back if the next explanation conflicts with it.
For the approval, compounding and federal prescribing notes, the source check was on September 26, 2026.
If a service says a rule has changed, ask to see the newer record.
